Mathematics

MathsMathematics is a significant area of teaching for dyslexic children. Some children may have problems with arithmetical computation which are related to their short-term memory deficit.

We teach strategies to help our dyslexic children overcome their difficulties in tables, arithmetic and number concepts. These strategies are assisted by the use of calculators and other well tried techniques.

Mathematics is taught by specialist, experienced staff in small groups of up to six pupils. We stretch the abilities of each child without making impossible demands. The skills and understanding of mathematics are necessary for the study of other subjects and vital for the children's future adult lives.

We use many different schemes including Ginn Mathematics, SMP Work Cards and STP Mathematics. Common Entrance and GCSE books and past papers are used with older children.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

Using computersComputers prove to be a tremendous source of motivation and enjoyment for our children. They also provide key reinforcement of the learning programme. East Court is extremely well equipped with micro-processing systems, and the entire school is networked. Each child has a unique email address.

We offer extensive computer-assisted learning and we teach all our children Information and Communication Technology. Children learn how to access and use a network. They use a variety of computer software programs including desk-top publishing, data bases, spreadsheets, LOGO and graphics. Computing is also integrated with other subjects, particular emphasis being placed on word-processing. Every classroom has its own hard-disc computer and printer. Appropriate and carefully monitored use of the Internet is also part of the ICT resource of the school. We also encourage the use of lap-top computers.

Of course, there are other computer programs for the children to access in their spare time, from Arcade-type games to Chess.

Physical Education

SportWe believe that all our children should be physically fit within their individual capabilities. We have a full programme of physical education that includes Educational Gymnastics and Amateur Athletics Association (AAA) awards.

We have school teams in Soccer, Cricket, Netball, Rounders and Rugby and play with great success against many other local schools.

East Court initiated the successful National Dyslexic Schools Rugby Tournament and we have won the cup on a number of occasions.

The Sciences and Art

ScienceWe have found that dyslexic children are often very gifted in Science, Art and Creative Technology.

Science studies benefit particularly well from our fully equipped, purpose-built laboratory. (Some of our past pupils now have University awards and degrees in Science and related areas.)

Artistic expression is the flip-side of dyslexia and many of our pupils have excelled in applied and creative arts, going on to college and flourishing careers in the creative industries. We regularly compete successfully in the Thanet Music and Drama Festival.
